My channel, "Roy Schreyer" is about adventures taken aboard the custom boat designs, I've built. Each design fits a unique purpose and are interesting, one of a kind builds! We have Georgian Bay, a beautiful cruising grounds and many equally beautiful lakes in our "back yard"! We take you all along for the ride! Enjoy, Allthebest, Roy Schreyer
BEST SAILBOAT I DESIGNED, 16ft CROW an Excellent Shoal Draft Camp Cruiser
CROW has turned out great! With a full queen bed, two "couches" that I and crew can sit inside to sail from in bad weather, makes CROW the best small sailboat design I know!!! Drawing just 10in with shallow bilge keels and a single leeboard, CROW can sail into the wind in very skinny water! The unique arched and rockerred hull form, with a highly crowned cabin top, Crow is self righting when hatches have been battoned down! This and six float chambers make Crow a very safe boat! Don't take it from me, ask Peter, Crow sails like a keelboat! Consider her overall form, is like a Beachball, and with weight from stores secured low in the hull, she wants to stay upright, like a coin taped to the underside of a beachball! She is a breeze to sail and is fully rigged in 20min, ready to go! If you're looking to build a sailboat, CROW is a safe secure ride and makes a great home away from home, once at your cozy cove! Check RoyDesignedThat.com for more information...Thanks for checking her out! AllthebestRoy

Wouldn't it be great to have a Dianne's Rose get together event with all the builds ? That would be cool .
It would be cool!
Well done. Lovely lil boat!!
@jamesbeaman5944 thanks Jim. I'm able to do full time on her so she should be in the water soon ish! AllthebestRoy
This is a great build ! Loving the design process .. thanks for taking us through it .. what type and size plywood are you using ? I’ve seen people using non marine ply ?
And happy Canada Day 🎊 🎉💥
#/8" Marine ply! I had trouble getting 3/8" in 4x8ft sheets so purchased 5 X 10ft sheets instead, I made a pannel cutter for my small battery saw, basically a straight edge that is clamped onto the sheet to guide the saw! I found this an excellent way to cut sheets vs running them through the table saw! While I used Marine ply for MiniD on the hull and cabin sides, I used exterior grade 3/8"/ 3ply spruce ply for the roof as I wanted the character of the grain to show on the ceiling! I have had good experience with this ply but I wait until Home Depot has a new lift and pick out the best sheets! It can be crap if you arent careful but I've managed to build CROW and OSPREY from this ply with ecxelent results for $30 per sheet vs almost $250 per sheet for Marine grade! The key is to epoxy glass it for the hull! It also requres a fair bit of work to spooth the surface, which I do using thickenned epoxy! I also make a glaing with my primer to do finer filling for a smooth finish! My buddies have built boats using this ply with good results but one friend only painted his hull and it leaked the next season! The reason was not because of delamination but because the ply got wet, expanded and then checked when it dried out over winter! as there is only three plys, the water was able to migrate through the checks that opening in each layer! The solution was to esand and epoxy seal and glass it! I also glass the inside up past the waterline as rainwater will soak into the ply otherwise and become traped against the outer glass, causing premature rot! Think of a glass of water, the water stays in the bottom of the glass, trapped there! You don't want water trapped in the bottom of your hull! But, yes, if you are aware of the pitfalls, you most definately can build a sound boat from cheaper exterior grade ply! Fir is another good option! AllthebestRoy
Beautiful
How long is it Roy.?
13ft 6in but has cantalevered cockpit seat, so 14ft if including this. I'll be getting bact to work on MiniD this week! She'll soon be launched! BestRoy
Skilful boat-handling
Only thanks to my bride Peter! Lol!
Nice. How does it handle "weather"? How do you not get lost? I see no GPS. Local knowledge?
She handles rougher water surprisingly well. The bottom is not a full flat bottom but has "v"d sections on both 24in sides that rise up to just below the waterline on the chine. This helps her track well, and wind is not the issue with the heavily crowned roof and the fact that barge hulls settle into a trough at speed, created by the bow rolling the water in front. We have been out in 6ft breaking seas!!! A ride but a safe one. That said, DIANNE'S ROSE is designed to handle it, so we get home, not to ignore good seamanship! We keep a weather eye out and find shelter, like some if the coves you saw, and sit out the worst! AllthebestRoy
@@roydesignedthat wonder full
@@randallbates8891 I missed answering about local knowledge...we carry paper charts and I look at Google Earth to look for interesting spots that the chart isnt clear on. but we do a lot of "play by feel" and move into interesting coves by reading rocks and water! I don't think anyone has explored the "J" channel in a motor boat! BestRoy
Do they not sell impeller guards against rocks and weeds. I know the outboard has a protruding wing that lifts the motor up if you hit a log or a rock. But reversing no protection. Perhaps have peace of mind with a reversing impeller guard.😂
Just curious, do you carry a spare prop? Love that beautiful scenery!
Yes two but I've never had to replace it whaile on a trip! I'm fast to through it into neutral so just the skeg hits and the odd time the prop has hit, it only got nicks on the blade and was still usable. I do cary a file and have filed the nicks out at camp on occassion! Not bad, though for ten seasons cruising in mostly uncharted waters! Did I mention the time we ran up onto a stump at full throttle! Yes we did, but the boat is tough and we dragged it off with just a scratch on the bottom paint! AllthebestRoy
Great camera shots... I always listen to others with a different view. Plus i enjoy when captains don't listen and mess up,,😂😢. Lol. The best part is you can fix anything on that boat Roy ..
Tim said it well... when I yell, it is in urgency, not in anger...or the like. But I appreciated it, as the damage could have ruined the trip! We are often cruising uncharted, shallow water with lots of rocks. This is why we have the whole place to ourselves!!! AllthebestRoy
Great video beautiful skinny water cruising I'm amazed at the tight turning raidus your craft has.
When designing her, a boating friend told me she would be hard to turn! Lol! After ten yrs we are very happy with our tiny houseboat! AllthebestRoy
Nail biting but beautiful scenery enjoyed the ride👍
As you know, it is a joy to get out in the wilds. I normally edit out Dianne when she yells, but I felt it was a good example of my bride helping to keep us safe! Someone put it well, "yelling with urgency, not anger." After 40 years together, she knows well the trouble I can get into if left to my own judgment! Lol! AllthebestRoy
@@roydesignedthat last trip out I ended up on a stump that v bottom had us listing hard glad I had enough power to work her off I should have filmed it but wanted off lol
@GJCAMPING film the drama! Lol! I have a clip somewhere where we ran up on a stump, too, but I can't find it anymore. We need to be towed off. No damage. I was looking forward to a shallow section when I hit the stupid full speed, 6mph, lol! Still, we were stuck part way up in the air with friends on board. Luckily, a fisherman saw us hit and helped tow us off! I'll have to edit out Diannes' comments! Lol!!!
Nice going, Roy! Di too, of course 🙂👍
I am from Ontario . The Georgian Bay area is SO beautiful , but be warned , he storms can be EPIC .
So true! We live in Wasaga Beach, I love storm watching, but we look for a safe harbor if anything looks threatening! I don't know if you heard me say that "this would make a good hurricane hole"! I'm always on the lookout for such shelter!!! AllthebestRoy
PS, where you at? BestRoy
Something i would tell a new crew before heading out was "When i yell i am expressing urgency, not anger." That has to be the most interesting and beautiful summertime cruising grounds.
It is Tim! Great point as well!!! Urgency is appreciated!!!
The best footage on YT Roy. Question: how often have you struck bottom? Outboard lower unit? Lost props. It's such a beautiful but unforgiving environment.
I slow down and keep a good look ahead so if seeing we are goint to hit rocks, I quickly reverse, if it's too late, I throw it neutral and the motor's skeg will usually bounces over! I've once had the boat up on a submerged stump amd we hit one rock hard enough to rip off the front section of an aluminum cap on one runner! I bent it back into shape, reattached and we carried on! We are lucky we have not done more damage though as we go into uncharted areas, as you can see! You know how clear the water is though, so that is the advantage on the Great Lakes! Ten years of exploring and our bottom paint is still in tact! Di is a great help and will speak up if I'm pushing my luck! Lol!
@roydesignedthat she will yell at you Roy! Lol ;) going slow, looking ahead and clear water...you got it;) awesome video
@@backwatersandbackroads Someone said it well, yelling with urgency not anger! That's valuable!!! BestRoy
We know Dee your the best no worries..:love the hair looks great
I worry her often but she has saved us a rock incounter several times! Teamwork. AllthebestRoy
What is the new seat? Where did you get it?
An old camp chair, I kept the fabric after the metal parts wore out. BestRoy
I'm always super impressed by that tiny camper. It can get in such shallow waters.
The key is that I can control her from up front, looking down in the water and drafting just 6in at dead slow! Polaroid glasses are also key. I do not bother with a depth sounder. It would not tell me about the bolder ahead of the boat, so it is a wasteful item. It would just make Di nervous as I'm always playing in the shallows! BestRoy
Love this design!
Thanks!
This is the best houseboat video. Sailing in the ocean
Not the Ocean Cal but still big water! The Great Lakes are known for being a ship wreck graveysrd but this run is not bad. We keep a weather eye out and find shelter when we see the conditions turn bad! AllthebestRoy
I really admire what you are doing. I have been a carpenter all of my career and I think that your houseboats are great. I don't think that I have enough drive to finish a large project like that. The places that you go just look amazing. You should be very proud of what you have accomplished. Maybe even write a book, houseboat adventures. Thanks for taking the time to video all of your adventures and put it on line for the rest of us to enjoy. Sincerely, Joe
Thanks so much, Joe! I think it helps that I'm an idealist! When I get an idea in my head, I insist on seeing the real deal! I've built many things and know if you keep at it, it'll get done eventually. Time passes regardless, so why not have something to show for it down the road. It is a sweet feeling transitioning from the build to using your houseboat! My goal is to spend more time doing so! A book you say? My bride thinks I should write one as well, but it would be a big project, I'm not sure I could have the patience! Lol! Take care Joe, thanks so much for the encouragement! BestRoy
So pretty! We continue to be impressed with what Dianne's Rose can do! Great tip about reversing after hitting a patch of weeds or sea grass to clear the gunk from the prop.
Thanks, guys! Glad to see your repair work complete and Baby Blue good to go! By the way, my MiniD will have a similar color scream! AllthebestRoy
@3:44 Cabin top hatch, " you can put your coffee here, fishing tackle..." fill full of dew and rain water when you forget to close it. lol
In our DIANNE'S ROSE, we even take out the screens and set the lexan back up if a cool damp evening/night is expected! You'll close the hatch, in those conditions, not to worry! The first chilly night sleeping will train you to know better next time! And if it is raining, it will be left closed as well, other than to exit and enter. I showed the water catchment, it will be an added bonus, to catch rain water saving you from needing to restock at a marina!!! AllthebestRoy
@@roydesignedthat A small little drain in the edge of the lowest edge of the hatch still might be a good idea, least you get a surprise shower pulling the hatch closed.
@obsidianjane4413 possibly! When using MiniD, any flaws are likely to come to our attention, and most definitely, they will be addressed in the build plans! Thanks for your input! BestRoy
This sure beats the heck out of the Rideau Cannal. Absolutely delightful.
Although this is a short run vs a longer Rideau! Di and must do that run at one point! DIANNE'S ROSE, visiting the parlament building!
I would stay lost for a long time guys... Stunning ❤👍
I hope to one day be more free to get lost all the time! Lol!

WOW, what a beautiful area.
It is but also timeless!
A good example of why we live in the Northland;)
I like when I see you poking up small rivers or into small coves as this is my favorite part! Few motor boats could make it into this spot! Did you see the tree that fell> we tied up to that years ago! That could have been bad timing! Lol!
@roydesignedthat this is a video o watch twice Roy ;) we're back to parallel lines with you...skinny water ans big water coming up ,)

looks great. I dig the plex hatch set up. I bet you could have a few decorative plants in there.
Decorative plants are part of the plan, Zack! I'm thinking a planter box outside mounted in the cockpit, on the cabin back wall!
Another nice boat coming together great work and ideas as usual 👍✌️
Thanks Buddy! I wish I was a bit faster but working out details takes a bit! You'd know! AllthebestRoy
GJCAMPING I'm not surprised to see you commenting here, maybe im wrong but when I seen the roof design on your new boat I felt like maybe it was inspired by Roy's design for Dianne's Rose.
Roy, the MiniD looks real good, I like the compactness you have achieved, but it doesn't seem to feel compact I think it's because you have the hatches in the front and the back to stand up in, that is so cool. You made a fo pa, you said "you were playing around with Plexiglass" (which is acrylic), and we both know it's Lexan (polycarbonate), LOL. I like it a lot !!!!
Thanks buddy, true I get dyslexic and miss speak often! Lots gets edited out! But I do apply my skills to the best of my ability, and I believe it shows, as you've notived! I'm excited to see MiniD floating! AllthebewstRoy
You got it all figured out - great workmanship, Roy!!! So much to learn here. I realy enjoy following the progress on this project. Awesome idea with the glas inserts for the hatches. I guess it is the acknowledgement of our wives that provide a tremendous boost and making us men feel like their heroes...🤗
Certainly helps that my bride supports my creative passions as building my designs takes time from other things we could be doing! I'm blessed she enjoys getting out on the water with me! Few men have this. AllthebestRoy
Great work Roy
Thanks John! I could be faster but the details are better for the time I'm taking! AllthebestRoy
Lookin’ good Roy!
Thanks Tom, when you are in the neighborhood, I'll give you a tour! Allthebest to you and Jennie!
How much is the headroom inside the cabin?
5ft 2.5in but with hatches propped up, 6ft 6in or more depending how you cut the lexan. You could do a full "A" frame if taller. The intent is to be able to get to your seat when underway and then pop up the hatches when camped. My goal is to fit the boat with low bed trailer into a garage for storage! There are other ways to design the pop-up hatches, but this is simple and low profile.
Nice head room boat kenth beach drsft
@@roydesignedthat Yes! Fit in a garage with low bed trailer! That’s my goal! So… following this build with great enthusiasm! :)
